GTA 5 ERR_GFX_STATE Fix: Switch from Vulkan to DirectX 12

Rockstar's troubleshooting guidance for a GTA 5 PC launch crash displaying ERR_GFX_STATE recommends trying these remedies in order: update or revert the graphics driver, switch the Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12, and, if necessary, change compatibility settings for GTAV.exe.

1. Update or revert the graphics driver

Install the latest driver for your NVIDIA or AMD graphics card. If the latest driver is already installed and the error continues, Rockstar recommends reverting to an earlier driver version.

2. Switch from Vulkan to DirectX 12

Rockstar provides these steps:

  1. Launch GTA 5 and select Settings from the main menu.
  2. Select Graphics.
  3. Set Advanced Settings to Unlocked.
  4. Set Graphics API to DirectX 12.
  5. Save the settings, but do not restart when prompted.
  6. Return to the main menu.

3. Change the compatibility settings for GTAV.exe

If the preceding remedies do not work, Rockstar recommends locating GTAV.exe through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher. Open the file's Properties, select Compatibility, and enable both Run this program as an administrator and Disable fullscreen optimization. Select OK, return to the launcher, and launch GTA 5.

Rockstar confirms that GTAV Enhanced is available through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

4. Verify the game files
