Rockstar says the “BattlEye is required to play GTA Online” alert can appear when BattlEye is disabled on a PC or when someone attempts to launch GTA Online on a Steam Deck.
Enable BattlEye automatically
Follow the alert’s prompt to restart Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar says this automatically changes the BattlEye setting.
Enable BattlEye manually on PC
Story Mode and Community RP servers
BattlEye only needs to be active during online sessions such as GTA Online. Depending on the PC platform, the applicable setting or launch option can disable BattlEye for Story Mode.
Official Rockstar Community RP servers do not require BattlEye. Community Server launchers disable it as part of their launch processes.
Steam Deck limitation
Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online. Rockstar says Steam Deck players can play GTA V Story Mode but cannot play GTA Online.

- Open the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Select Settings.
- Check the BattlEye checkbox.
- Launch Grand Theft Auto V and join GTA Online.
